Bard on the Beach Tackles King John

Each year, along with crowd pleasers like Hamlet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Shakespeare-by-the-sea fest presents one of the Bard’s more difficult, unloved plays. It’s these outliers we find ourselves looking back on most fondly. This season, its 22nd, Bard on the Beach offers The Merry Wives of Windsor, Macbeth, and The Taming of the Shrew. But it’s the debut of history play King John (featuring Lucas Gustafson as John’s short-lived heir, Arthur) that excites us. Infrequently produced, dauntingly complicated, King John tells of the dynastic and bloody battle in the 1200’s between the courts of England and France.

King John runs July 11 to September 19 on the Studio Stage
