Burmese cuisine is still a relative rarity in Greater Vancouver. Amay’s House (Gold) will leave anyone who experiences chef/co-owner Hihaa Kyaw’s fragrant, palate-stunning efforts asking why. A simple salad of fermented tea leaves, tomato, and cabbage is a taste revelation, while soups and noodle and rice dishes explode with variously bracing and soothing notes brought forth by the judicious use of basil leaves, lemongrass, coconut oil, and shrimp powder. The two outlets of Penang Delight Cafe (Silver) are reliably busy, the hordes drawn in by complex Malaysian curries and fun fried snacks like chicken wings and fabulously crunchy squid. Banana Leaf (Bronze) has grown from a single outlet in 1995 to five today; its success is just reward for delivering accessible Malaysian fare with unwavering consistency, and introducing the now ubiquitous likes of lettuce wraps, papaya salad, and sambal green beans to a previously unfamiliar populace.
