It’s week three of my 2023 weekly gift guide series, and time to deal with one of the most damning presents of all: jewellery. On one (sparkly) hand, jewellery is a pretty simple go-to gift for a partner, close friend or family member. On the other, jewellery is one of those very personal gifts—like perfume or cologne—that runs the risk of either being misinterpreted or straight up disliked by the receiver.
But hey, it’s 2023 and we’re taking risks. Here are some of my top foolproof jewellery picks (plus one box for safekeeping) that are designed in Vancouver or can be purchased in Vancouver stores.
Devi Arts Collective
A single ring? High commitment. Unpredictable. Possibly wildly awkward. But stacking rings? Genius. Versatile. Unreadable. These stackable rings start at $36 and are extremely wearable—they can be worn alone or mixed and matched. Ideal for the indecisive (but I think the gold flat ball stacker is a must). deviartscollective.com
It’s hard to define the meaning of the word “cool” exactly (and trying to do so will always achieve the opposite), but climber earrings are definitively cool. Especially these sparkly-yet-subtle earrings from Lover’s Tempo, which include a cheeky chain detail. $55, loverstempo.com
This super-unique gemstone necklace by Vancouver designer Leah Yard is so effortlessly elegant (and also kind of emo in a way I’m digging). It’s dainty enough to be layered with other necklaces or worn alone. $110, leahyarddesigns.com
How edgy are these? Mejuri’s triangular drop earrings would look just as good with a denim jacket as they would with evening wear, but they walk the careful line between a statement piece and a delicate detail. This brand is based in Toronto, but has a store in Kits. $98, mejuri.com
Here’s the thing about birthstones and star signs: not everyone relates to their own, and not all of them are created equal. Do November-born scorpios love sporting a topaz or being constantly asked what the letter “M” stands for? As an emerald Gemini, I actually don’t care, but I do think that birth flowers are the way to go when it comes to jewellery, and this pendant necklace from Courtenay-based Wildflower Mercantile is very pretty. $45, wildflowermercantile.ca
These statement earrings from Copper Canoe Woman are dedicated to the octopus and available in six different colourways (the one pictured above is seaglass). They’re compliment magnets, so make sure your giftee loves to bask in the glory of the attention of others (this would be an excellent gift for me). $40, coppercanoewoman.com
Gifting something from Pyrrha automatically limits the misinterpretation factor: their jewellery is purposely symbolic and comes with a handy-dandy card that plainly lays out the meaning. For example, the stamp on this signet ring means “this is to help you to find direction and keep you on the path to your heart’s true desires” and the diamond means “I have money.” $495, pyrrha.com
Fine, this isn’t jewellery. But it’s also versatile and functional: a useful, thoughtful, long-lasting gift that very few people realize they actually need until it’s midnight the day before their flight and they’re desperately trying to untangle a necklace. monos.com
