Back by popular demand, Vancouver’s second TEDxGastownWomen event is happening October 29, and the theme this year is power. “Turns out it hasn’t been done before at a TEDx,” says organizer Brittany Whitmore. “This year we’ve got people at it from all sorts of different angles.”Whitmore, along with her team, had the difficult task of choosing 12 speakers from a list of 260 applicants. “We were looking for great ideas over people. So you could have the most famous person in the world walk in, but if their idea is not something we want to put on the stage, we’re going to turn them away,” explains Whitmore.A few of this year’s speakers include 2014 Vancouver Magazine Power 50 honouree Barinder Rasode talking about what it means to be a powerful woman in the South Asian community, Shirley Weir on the misunderstandings of menopause and Vicki McLeod on being childless by choice.Whitmore hopes that this year’s speaker series sparks discussion between attendees. “I would like for them to have conversations at the event that they wouldn’t necessarily normally have,” she says. “I’d like them to talk about topics that maybe are not on their minds all the time, but are very important topics to discuss and very important issues to bring to the surface.” To top the day off, there will be a pole dance performance by Tantra Fitness’s Rosalyn Mow. “She’s incredible. She’s like Cirque du Soleil,” says the event organizer.Get Your Tickets.
