The holidays may be over, but that doesn't mean the over-indulgence needs to stop. Here are the most delicious food events in Vancouver for January 2024.
Not looking forward to January? Time to change that. Set some delicious intentions for 2024 by pencilling a few tasty events into the calendar. A long-table dinner of venison tourtière or a sushi-and-sake date night, anyone? We’ll see you there.
Nothing brightens up a rainy Monday quite like cracking open a crustacean. Lucky for you, Straight and Marrow is hosting a raucous Seafood Boil for one night only with all the usual ocean bounty; Dungeness crab, mussels, clams, and shrimp, along with corn, andouille sausage and cornbread. WHEN: January 29 WHERE: 1869 Powell St.
Oysters with a side of Abba? Gimme, gimme, gimme. Find it the third Sunday of each month at The Victor’s Disco Brunch, where a DJ spins ’70s tunes and you make quick work of a mimosa cart, roast beef station, caramelized bananas foster waffles, and more. (Yes, disco wear is encouraged.)
WHEN: January 21 WHERE: 39 Smithe St.
The habitant meals served at Quebec’s famous “sugar shacks” are the inspo behind this long table dinner series at Michelin-starred St. Lawrence. Toast your neighbour while indulging in a seven-course, family-style spread: think venison tourtière, split pea soup with foie gras, and a devilishly good maple tart.
WHEN: January 17–27 WHERE: 269 Powell St.
To welcome the Year of the Dragon, Notch8 is hosting a series of luxurious themed afternoon teas—munch on duck confit green onion pancakes, black sesame macarons, and more—with the potential to win one of eight Golden Tickets hidden inside red envelopes. Prizes range from a complimentary tea for two to an overnight stay upstairs. WHEN: January 4–February 25 WHERE: 900 West Georgia St.
Nothing says “fresh start” like a just-made sushi spread, and North Van’s Sushi Mahana has a special set menu planned to celebrate Oshogatsu, which means “the first three days of the New Year” in Japanese. It includes traditional dishes like kazunoko (herring roe) and kuromame (black soybeans), and it kicks off with a symbolic sake toast. (Speaking of sake, Mahana will also celebrate its first anniversary with an intimate sake pairing dinner on January 17.) WHEN: January 3–6 WHERE: 175 3rd St. W., North Vancouver
The best wine-pairing dinners have the winemakers present. Enter Vancouver Island’s Averill Creek Winery, which drops into town for one night only at Michelin-recommended Bar Susu. Winemaker Brent Rowland will match up terroir-driven bottles with Bar Susu’s ever-innovative cuisine for a night to remember. WHEN: January 21 WHERE: 2650 Main St.
No plans to travel this month? Take a culinary trip with the Como team, who recently travelled to Madrid and Barcelona to bring back inspo for Taste Our Travels, a seven-course tasting menu designed for groups of two. WHEN: January 17–February 4 WHERE: 201 East 7th Ave.
Bring all your indecisive friends to Destination Vancouver’s 12th Annual food truck festival, which runs for eight days just steps from the Vancouver Art Gallery and has something tasty to suit everyone. Bonus: no reservations needed. WHEN: January 20–28 WHERE: šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl’e7énk Square, West Georgia St.
The Acorn plays host to Dine Out Vancouver’s eighth annual chef-pairing dinner, which teams up two world-class chefs. This year it’s Chef Jan Ostle from Wilson’s in London, UK, with the Acorn’s own executive chef Matt Gostelow. Wilson’s holds a Michelin Green Star, awarded for sustainable practices, so expect an innovative veggie-forward menu. WHEN: January 23 WHERE: 3995 Main St.
Make 2024 the year you dine on sustainable seafood while surrounded by fish. But, really. This unique experience gives guests magical after-hours access to one of the city’s best attractions alongside a menu of line-caught turbot, BC-sourced 63 Acres beef and Ocean Mama prawns.
WHEN: January 19–February 4 WHERE: 845 Avison Way
Need a few more options? Check out Dine Out Festival Vancouver (January 17 – February 4) and the Hot Chocolate Festival (January 13 – February 14). So there’s really no excuse to hibernate all month long, okay?
