Breaking: Chupito Is Reopening in a New Location on April 16

The beloved cocktail-forward Mexican restaurant is back—this time in a temporary space in Mount Pleasant

It’s no secret that we at Vanmag are fans of Chupito (heck, it even snagged Bronze in our Restaurant Awards a few years ago). We were thrilled when the restaurant and cocktail bar opened in 2021—and not just because the hidden DTES patio space meant we could socialize safely with friends during the pandemic, but because as the brainchild of co-owners Marcelo Ramirez (of La Taqueria) and Tara Davies (previously of Toronto’s famed Bar Raval) we knew we were in for some fantastic cocktails and eats.

We were so, so right. Since then, we’ve enjoyed the creative cocktail selection (probably the only time I’ve ever fallen in love with a blended drink) and ever-delicious food (one of the best tuna tostadas with salsa matcha I’ve ever had—period). Chupito has seen some high highs (winning a Michelin Bib Gourmand! Bringing on the talented Maria Ponce as executive chef!) and some frustrating lows (like the city not permitting the patio space, which led to its closure in 2024).

So we’re so excited to share that Chupito is back, baby—and this time, it’s opening its doors (and patio!) on April 16 in Mount Pleasant. Chef Maria Ponce is back at the helm of the kitchen, crafting Mexican fare that’s both approachable and inventive (think: whole fried sea bream with sofrito, salsas negros and chipotle, served with garlic aioli, mango xnipec—a fresh Yucatán-style salsa—and corn tortillas).

Behind the bar, Tara Davies and Erick Vazquez are back doing their signature thing too: crafting thoughtful, creative drinks that feel like a vibrant celebration of all things Mexico. In the past, that’s meant using culinary-driven ingredients (think cilantro, corn husk, or poblanos) and unique liquors—and we can only assume that tradition will continue at the new locale. You might remember that the Chupito of yesteryear provided a welcome drink—this tradition is being carried over to the new location; as are some of the most popular beverages that were on the previous menu—though word on the street is that the duo has some fun, new cocktails up their sleeves, too. In addition, there will continue to be a curated selection of wine, beer and cider.
